
Life in the village continues but the time for a challenge appears when a healing game of lacrosse (Tekwaarathon) is prescribed for an Elder who is sick. This action is appreciated but it also means that he has made an enemy of the youth. So he tells the Elders about the plans of the youths. He understands the teachings embedded within the principles of The Great Law of Peace. Ohkwa'ri is respectful of his grandmother and other village Elders. The boy must come to terms with the bully and his plans that could lead to a disastrous raid.

Ohkwa'ri and his sister, Otsi:stia, must deal with everyday life in their Mohawk village as well as overcoming the bullying behavior of an older youth and his clique who plan a raid against an Abenaki village.


Set during the 1490s in Mohawk Nation Territory, Bruchac weaves a story about 11-year-old twins who are brother and sister. Children of the Longhouse is an excellent historical fiction novel by noted Abenaki author, Joseph Bruchac.
